Context:  

The 80 Plus Ruby PSU (Power Supply Unit) efficiency rating has recently been introduced by CLEAResult, the entity responsible for the widely recognized 80 Plus certification program. This new tier surpasses the previous top standard, 80 Plus Titanium, and is specifically aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of power supplies used in data centers and servers. This development comes in response to the surging electricity demand from cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and other data-intensive applications, highlighting the urgent need to curtail energy wastage in these rapidly expanding infrastructures.

What is it?

80 Plus Certification: A voluntary program that certifies the energy efficiency of computer and server power supply units. The “80 Plus” label originally signified that a PSU converts at least 80% of the AC power from the wall outlet into usable DC power for the computer, with the remaining percentage lost as heat.

Efficiency Tiers: The program has traditionally offered several tiers of certification, each requiring higher efficiency at various load levels (20%, 50%, and 100% of rated load), including: Standard, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Titanium.

80 Plus Ruby: This is the newest and highest efficiency tier introduced by CLEAResult. It sets even more stringent efficiency requirements than 80 Plus Titanium.

Key Requirements for Ruby (for 277V/480V AC-to-DC & 380V DC Internal Redundant PSUs):
90% efficiency at 5% load (a new requirement, crucial for idle servers).
91% efficiency at 10% load.
95% efficiency at 20% load.
96.5% efficiency at 50% load (peak efficiency).
92% efficiency at 100% load.

Target Audience: Currently, 80 Plus Ruby is exclusively for server-grade and data center power supplies, particularly internal redundant power supplies, which are common in enterprise environments. There is no consumer-grade version of this standard yet.
